Marco Giardina’s Granular Monster Drone Concept
Q. What was the concept for your Granular Monster Drone expansion pack?
A. The Granular Monster Drone expansion pack was conceived as an instrument to make sounds effects to be sampled and used on thriller and horror movies. It was inspired by orchestral strings effects like clusters and scratchings. It is an easy way to add suspense and atmosphere without record a string session. I programmed 25 of the presets and Gary Gibbons programmed the other 25 presets.
Q. How did you make the Monster Drone instrument?
A. It is made with two pieces of wood and some cello strings fixed with nails. At the top of the wooden handle there is an old tin box of biscuits with inside contact microphones connected to a jack for direct amplification. The good sound transmission properties of the wood let the sound vibrations to be captured by the audio board.
